Theology of Sleep

Sleeping is an act of worship in humble surrender to the One who watches over us who neither slumber nor sleep. Our Creator God has intentionally fashioned us with a body that needs to sleep daily. Not weekly, monthly, or biannually. The reason is simple. We need daily reminders that we are frail and limited creatures. To neglect the gift of sleep is self-worship, resulting in the suffering of our mood and deterioration of our health.

Sleeping is also an act of faith, for the Lord gives to his beloved in their sleep. True productivity is ultimately not about working hard, or working smarter. To be productive is to do our God-appointed lot daily, stop, and then go to bed in faith. Sleeping is declaring that what matters is not the builders who labor, but the Lord who builds for he can do far more in my sleep than my best efforts in my most-productive, highly caffeinated day.

Sleeping is an act of resistance to the world who gives us endless stimuli to be anxious. Only the paranoid survives, but for how long and at what cost? Turn your eyes to the Saviour who could enjoy a deep sleep even through a storm, and you know that in him you too can tune off from the world and close your eyes to slumber.

Let us therefore pray, "Heavenly Father, give us today our daily sleep"
